VOC Atlantis is the first Brazilian oceanographic ship and has already concluded one trip around Greenland in the Arctic Ocean, one trip around the world and one winter trip to Antarctica.

Because of the current "BRA monitor" project, this ship will be repaired for an oceanographic monitoring of the oil explorations impact and natural resources quality evaluation on all Brazilian coasts.

Upon a cooperation partnership between WEG and the oceanography institute "Atlantis Oceanography and Special Projects", the project scope includes an expedition on a monthly basis with university students from oceanographic courses and related sciences of University of ItajaĂ Valley (UNIVALI), Federal University Foundation of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (FURG) and University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) with the purpose of making them familiar with environmental education through actual contact with ocean life and fish breeding communities.

Data collection will be made via satellite for further supply to oceanography research institution. "BRA monitor" will also provide support to students on the fulfillment of their academic studies.

The exact date of this trip has not been scheduled yet since the painting performance depends on the environmental conditions. The oceanographic ship, which is today anchored at the Detroit yard in ItajaĂ is classified as a sailing boat a vela type kecht (two masts), built with steel structure and powered by an 180HP, 6 cylinder Mercedes engine. It is considered a safe, versatile and economical ship since the main propeller is wind little fuel is required when in operation.
