At a large paper mill in Georgia, the Plant Engineer was given the task of replacing their existing 1250HP WPII fan pump motors with Totally Enclosed AC System Drives motors. The main issues were; limited space around the motor and, due to machine changes, the need to increase the HP from 1250HP to 1500HP. WEG’s Matt Florczykowski, worked with the plant engineer and quickly realized that our standard M and H line enclosed motors were physically too large for the existing space. Matt then worked with WEG Energy and Jake Avitabile, Application Engineer, to gather more information about the WGM (Water Jacket) Motor design.
Historically, the WGM motor is a proven product and has been a successful seller for WEG, but only in the marine industry - as a bow thruster motor. Since there is an abundant amount of water available throughout a paper mill, Matt presented this as a viable option to the paper mill. The plant engineer agreed and they placed an order for four of these WGM motors, which is one of the few applications water jacket motors have been used outside the marine industry.
The Plant Engineer commented that the “WEG water jacket motors are incredibility compact for their rated power.” Along with the increased HP required for this project, these new water jacketed motors deliver cool operation with extremely low vibration and noise.
