To address the water shortage situation in Telangana, a very dry region in southern of the country, India has built the world's largest lift irrigation project named as Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS).
Recently opened, the multi-purpose project is not only reinforcing the storage of water available for irrigation of 8 thousand km² of land in 13 districts of the state, but it is also increasing groundwater levels in the Godavari River Basin to supply industries and improve opportunities subsistence for the population, through agricultural activities associated with fishing, tourism, etc.
WEG takes part of this project with the supply package of 14 x 40MW 30-pole motors to Xylem India PVT. LTD, one of the world´s largest hydraulic pump manufacturers, which couples these motors to its high-capacity pumps and supplies Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltda, the company responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of KLIS. The electric motors, the largest ever manufactured by WEG at its factory in India, individually weigh 262 tones and were all assembled and tested at the project site.
From the beginning of this pumping station (KLIS) construction in 2018 until the conclusion in June 2020, WEG´s revenues were in the range of US$ 26 million, having installed 22 machines with power ratings of 27 MW to 40 MW. This is the largest supply made to India and one of the largest packages ever sold by the company for the water segment.
“Supplying high-tech equipment to the world´s largest pumping project is a great reference for WEG, both from a technological / commercial point of view, as well as from the engineering design know-how and expertise. For this project, we built the largest electric motor ever manufactured by WEG India, an ambitious engineering project which will certainly open up many other global opportunities for the water and sanitation market segment ”, says João Paulo Gualberto da Silva, Managing Director of WEG Energy Business Unit.
Doing business in Indian market since 2001, WEG is today a consolidated brand in Southeast Asia, specially in the high voltage electric machine segment, including Synchronous Motors, particularly for river transposition / irrigation projects, as well as well as induction motors, in addition to hydrogenerators and turbogenerators. Since 2011, WEG has been manufacturing locally. Located in Hosur-Tamil Nadu, 40 km south of Bangalore-Karnataka, WEG´s Indian manufacturing operation is a greenfield project that counts today on approximately 800 employees and produces over 300 large rotating electric machines a year.
